A custom bakery box is a food-grade paperboard container built for baked goods: a flat tuck-lid or auto-lock base carton, usually with a grease-resistant interior and often a window, sized so pastries do not slide and icing does not touch the lid.

  • PFAS-free grease barriers. Compliant with current and pending PFAS restrictions in the US, EU, UK and Australia.
  • Headroom specified. Depth set 10–15 mm above the tallest item so lids never touch icing.
  • Windows without warping. We step the caliper up when an aperture is added so lids stay flat.
  • Counter-speed assembly. Auto-lock bases pop open in one motion during a service rush.

What are custom bakery boxes?

Grease is the design constraint. Butter and oil migrate through uncoated board within hours, leaving translucent patches that make fresh product look stale. A grease-resistant interior — a PFAS-free barrier coating or a clay-coated food-grade liner — is the difference between packaging that holds up and packaging that embarrasses the bakery.

Headroom is the second one. Decorated pastries, cream fillings and glazes need clearance so the lid never contacts the product. Bakery box depth is normally specified 10–15 mm above the tallest item, which is why standard depths cluster at 2.5, 3.5 and 4 in rather than following the products exactly.

Windows sell. A die-cut aperture with a clear food-safe film consistently lifts counter conversion because customers buy what they can see, and it also lets staff identify contents without opening the box. The trade-off is a small loss of panel rigidity, usually offset by stepping the board up one caliper.

Custom Bakery Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom bakery boxes.

Tuck-lid bakery box

One-piece box with a hinged tuck lid; fastest to assemble at the counter.

Auto-lock bottom box

Glued crash-lock base that pops open — stronger for heavier loads.

Window bakery box

Die-cut aperture with clear food-safe film across the lid or front.

Two-piece base and lid

Separate lid for delicate, tall or heavily decorated items.

Materials

Bright white, clay-coated interior, suitable for direct contact.
Grease-resistant coated board
PFAS-free barrier for buttery pastries and fried goods.

Popular custom bakery boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D)Typical use
4 x 4 x 2.5 inSingle cupcake or pastry
8 x 8 x 2.5 inFour cupcakes, danishes, croissants
10 x 10 x 2.5 inHalf-dozen donuts or pastries
12 x 9 x 3 inDozen donuts, mixed assortment
14 x 10 x 4 inLarge mixed bakery boxes and platters

How to choose custom bakery boxes

  1. Always specify the grease barrier

Uncoated board shows oil patches within hours. It is the most common complaint on cheap bakery boxes.

  2. Measure your tallest decorated item

Add 10–15 mm of headroom, not the product height exactly.

  3. Choose auto-lock for heavy loads

A dozen donuts is heavier than it looks; a tuck base can drop it.

  4. Add ventilation for warm goods

Small die-cut vents stop condensation making pastry bases soggy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your bakery boxes grease resistant?
Yes. We specify PFAS-free grease-resistant barrier coatings or clay-coated food-grade liners. This matters because butter and oil migrate through uncoated board within hours, leaving translucent patches.
Are bakery boxes food safe for direct contact?
Yes, when specified on food-grade board with compliant inks and coatings. Direct-contact grades use virgin fibre or a functional barrier over recycled content, and we can supply the compliance documentation.
Can bakery boxes have windows?
Yes — a die-cut aperture patched with clear food-safe film. Windows reliably lift counter conversion, and we step the board up one caliper to compensate for the lost panel rigidity.
What size bakery box do I need?
Measure your tallest decorated item and add 10–15 mm of headroom so the lid never touches icing. Standard depths of 2.5, 3.5 and 4 in cover most pastries, cupcakes and donuts.
What is the minimum order for custom bakery boxes?
100 boxes per size and artwork, with price breaks at 250, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 units — low enough for independent bakeries and cottage-food businesses.
Do bakery boxes need ventilation?
For warm items, yes. Small die-cut vents let steam escape so pastry bases do not go soggy. For cold or room-temperature products, vents are unnecessary and let the product dry out.
