A gable box is a die-cut carton whose top folds into a peaked roof with an integrated die-cut handle. It needs no assembly tools, carries like a small bag, and is the default format for takeaway meals, party favours, event giveaways and bakery gifts.
- Built-in handle. No separate bag or ribbon needed — the carry is part of the die-cut.
- Two-second close. The gable top locks without glue, tape or tools, which matters at service speed.
- Food-contact grades. Grease-resistant and barrier boards specified against your actual contents.
- Headroom by design. The peaked top stops decorated items being crushed at closure.
What are custom gable boxes?
The handle is a structural feature, not a decoration. The die-cut aperture sits at the apex where the two gable panels lock, so the load transfers through the fold rather than tearing the board. This is why gable boxes carry a surprising amount of weight for their caliper — but also why the board grade has to be right.
Because the top locks closed without glue or tape, gable boxes work well for food service where speed matters. A trained packer closes one in about two seconds, and the peaked top leaves headroom so contents are not compressed.
For food contact, the interior surface is the specification that matters. Grease-resistant coatings, PE-free barriers and virgin-fibre grades all exist; which you need depends on whether the contents are dry, moist or oily. Dry cookies and favours need nothing special; hot or greasy food does.

Match the barrier to the food
Dry goods need nothing; buttery or hot contents need a grease-resistant interior.
Do not undersize the caliper
The handle carries the whole load. Below 350 gsm the aperture tears on heavier packs.
Check stacking if you display them
Peaked tops do not stack. Specify a flat-handle variant if boxes sit on shelves.
