A custom display box is retail-ready packaging that ships product and merchandises it in the same unit. Counter display units (CDUs), shelf-ready packaging (SRP) and power wings all open or tear away to present stock face-out at the point of sale without a store associate repacking anything.

  • Ships and merchandises in one unit. No repacking at store level, which is what retail compliance teams reward.
  • Tear lines engineered, not guessed. Perforations are placed away from load-bearing corners so full cases still stack.
  • Retail-spec compliant. We can build to common grocery and pharmacy SRP dimension standards on request.
  • Low 50-unit minimum. Test a promotional display in a handful of doors before rolling out nationally.

What are custom display boxes?

Display packaging is measured by two numbers retailers care about: how many seconds it takes to get from pallet to shelf, and how much facing it occupies. A well-designed SRP tray goes shelf-ready in under five seconds with one tear line, which is why major grocery and pharmacy chains write it into their supplier specs.

Structurally these are usually E- or B-flute corrugated with a litho-laminated printed face. The board has to survive transit fully loaded and then look like point-of-sale material once opened, so the perforation geometry — where the tear line sits relative to the load-bearing corners — is the critical engineering detail.

Counter display units live near tills and win on impulse. Their economics are different from shelf packaging: a CDU that holds 12–24 units and refills from a case pack behind the counter often outperforms shelf space many times its footprint for low-price impulse SKUs.

Custom Display Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom display boxes.

Counter display unit (CDU)

Small tray or tiered unit sited at the till for impulse SKUs.

Shelf-ready packaging (SRP)

Tear-away transit case that becomes a shelf tray in one motion.

Power wing / clip strip

Narrow side-of-gondola display for cross-merchandising.

Floor-standing display (FSDU)

Full-height corrugated unit with header card and multiple shelves.

Materials

E-flute litho-laminated
Photographic print quality on a light, shelf-friendly board.
B-flute corrugated
Extra strength for heavier SKUs and floor-standing units.
White-top kraft
Cost-efficient board with a clean printable face.
Double-wall base pallets
Load-bearing bases for FSDUs holding significant weight.

Printing & finishing options

  • Litho-lamination
  • Perforated tear-away fronts
  • Header cards
  • Spot UV highlights
  • Anti-scuff matte coating

Who orders custom display boxes

  • FMCG brands supplying grocery, pharmacy and convenience chains
  • Confectionery, snack and beverage brands chasing impulse purchases

Popular custom display boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D)Typical use
9 x 6 x 4 inCounter unit for 12 small SKUs
12 x 8 x 5 inCounter unit for 24 units, confectionery and cosmetics
15 x 10 x 6 inShelf-ready tray for grocery case packs
18 x 12 x 8 inLarge SRP and half-pallet trays
24 x 16 x 60 inFloor-standing display with header card

How to choose custom display boxes

  1. Get the retailer's SRP spec first

Most chains publish tray depth, facing height and tear-line rules. Building without them causes rejections.

  2. Load-test before rollout

A perforated case must still survive a full pallet stack. Ask for a compression check.

  3. Design the header for distance

FSDU headers are read from 3–5 m. Two words and a logo beat a paragraph.

  4. Plan refill logistics

A CDU only performs if there is a case pack behind the counter to restock it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is shelf-ready packaging?
Shelf-ready packaging (SRP), also called retail-ready packaging, is a transit case with an engineered perforation that tears away to leave a display tray. Store staff move it from pallet to shelf in one action without unpacking individual units.
What is the difference between a CDU and an FSDU?
A counter display unit sits on a checkout counter and holds 12–24 impulse items. A floor-standing display unit is a full-height freestanding corrugated fixture with multiple shelves and a header card, used for promotional endcaps.
Will a perforated display box still survive shipping?
Yes, when the tear line is engineered away from the load-bearing corners. We place perforations so the case retains its stacking strength fully loaded, and can supply a compression estimate for your pallet configuration.
What is the minimum order for custom display boxes?
50 units per design, which is deliberately low so you can trial a display in a limited number of stores before a national rollout.
Can display boxes be printed photographically?
Yes. Litho-lamination onto E-flute gives full photographic quality, which is the standard for cosmetics and confectionery displays. Flexo spot colour is the economical alternative for simpler graphics.
Do you build to a specific retailer's specification?
Yes. Send the chain's SRP or display guideline document and we will build the dieline to their tray depth, facing height, tear-line and labelling requirements.
