Custom can packaging is the secondary packaging around canned drinks: 4-, 6- and 12-pack carriers, wrap-around cases, and gift cartons with dividers. Its job is to hold the cans immobile, survive a wet cold chain, and merchandise the brand at shelf.

  • Base built for the load. Crash-lock or fully glued bases as standard — a 12-pack is around 4.5 kg.
  • Wet-strength options. Coatings and boards specified for condensation, ice buckets and chilled shelves.
  • Versioning-friendly. One neutral carrier plus printed wraps supports a rotating seasonal range cheaply.
  • Sized to the can, not to a standard. 330 ml, 440 ml, 12 oz and 16 oz formats all have different diameters and heights.

What are custom can packaging?

Cans move a lot of weight in a small footprint — a 12-pack of 330 ml cans is close to 4.5 kg — so board grade and base construction do the real work. A crash-lock or fully glued base is essential; a plain tuck base will burst under that load the first time someone lifts the pack by the handle.

Moisture is the second constraint. Chilled cans sweat, and condensation is what destroys can packaging in a fridge or an ice bucket. A water-based moisture-resistant coating, or a wet-strength board, keeps the pack intact where an uncoated carton would soften within an hour.

For craft beverage brands, versioning matters as much as structure. A neutral carrier with a printed wrap or sleeve lets a brewery run one base pack across a rotating range, which is far cheaper than separate printed carriers for every seasonal release.

Wrap-around case

Board wrapped and glued around 12 or 24 cans for transit and shelf.

Fully enclosed carton

Closed printed box for gifting and premium retail packs.

Divider carton

Enclosed carton with corrugated cells separating each can.

How to choose custom can packaging

  1. Give us the exact can spec

Diameter and height differ between 330 ml and 12 oz cans. A few millimetres decides whether the pack is snug or rattles.

  2. Never accept a plain tuck base

Crash-lock or glued bases only. Tuck bases burst under multipack weight.

  3. Specify moisture resistance

If cans are ever chilled, condensation will destroy an uncoated carton.

  4. Version with wraps, not new carriers

Seasonal ranges are far cheaper handled with printed wraps over a neutral base pack.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What board do I need for a 6-pack can carrier?
Wet-strength SBS at 400–450 gsm with a crash-lock base, or E-flute corrugated for larger formats. A 6-pack of 330 ml cans is over 2 kg, and a 12-pack close to 4.5 kg, so the base construction matters more than the caliper.
Will can packaging survive a fridge or ice bucket?
Only with a moisture barrier. Chilled cans sweat, and condensation softens uncoated board within an hour. Specify a water-based moisture-resistant coating or a wet-strength board.
Can you make carriers for 440 ml tallboy cans?
Yes. We build to your exact can diameter and height — 330 ml, 440 ml, 12 oz and 16 oz cans all differ, and a few millimetres decides whether the pack holds firm or rattles.
How do I run seasonal beer releases without new carrier tooling?
Print a neutral base carrier at volume and version it with printed wraps, sleeves or labels for each release. Breweries with rotating ranges save substantially versus separately printed carriers.
What is the minimum order for custom can packaging?
100 carriers per size and artwork, with price breaks at 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units.
Do you supply dividers to stop cans knocking together?
Yes. Corrugated cell dividers are die-cut from the same run and are standard on enclosed gift cartons where cans would otherwise contact each other.
