A custom gift box is a presentation-first package — usually a two-piece lid-and-base or a magnetic-closure rigid box — built to be kept rather than discarded. Its job is the moment of opening: a controlled lid lift, a printed interior, and often a die-cut insert that holds each item in place.

  • Engineered lid fit. Lid-to-base tolerance is specified, not guessed, so the box opens with the resistance customers read as quality.
  • Insert design included. We supply the insert dieline alongside the box dieline so contents are held, not rattling.
  • Reusable by design. A gift box that stays on a shelf keeps delivering brand impressions long after the sale.
  • Collapsible option. Flat-shipped rigid boxes cut inbound freight dramatically for overseas production.

What are custom gift boxes?

Gift packaging is judged by resistance and reveal. A well-made lid should descend under its own weight with a slight air cushion rather than dropping loose; that comes from tolerancing the lid 1.5–2 mm larger than the base and choosing a 1.2–2 mm greyboard wrap. Cheap gift boxes fail on exactly this detail.

Interiors matter as much as exteriors. A foam, moulded pulp or folded-card insert stops contents shifting, frames the product, and lets a single box hold several SKUs in a curated set. For corporate and seasonal gifting programmes, the insert is usually what turns a box into a giftable kit.

Seasonal gifting has hard deadlines, so lead time planning is part of the spec. Foil stamping, embossing and ribbon assembly each add hand-finishing time; a Q4 campaign realistically needs artwork locked 8–10 weeks before the on-shelf date.

Custom Gift Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom gift boxes.

Lid and base (two-piece)

The classic gift box. Separate telescoping lid, deepest premium feel, no visible hinge.

Magnetic closure book box

Hinged flap with concealed magnets — reusable and the strongest perceived value.

Drawer / slide-out box

Inner tray slides from a printed sleeve; excellent for jewellery and small electronics.

Collapsible rigid box

Ships flat and pops up with magnets, cutting inbound freight by up to 70% versus pre-assembled.

Materials

Greyboard wrapped in art paper
1.5–2 mm chipboard wrapped in 128–157 gsm printed paper. The standard rigid build.
Specialty textured wrap
Linen, felt-marked or leatherette papers for tactile luxury without extra print cost.
SBS folding boxboard
Lighter, lower-cost two-piece boxes for mid-tier gifting at higher volumes.
Recycled greyboard
Typically 90–100% recycled core, uncoated wrap, for sustainability-led programmes.

Popular custom gift boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D)Typical use
6 x 6 x 2 inJewellery, candles, single-item gifts
8 x 8 x 3 inSkincare and confectionery sets
10 x 8 x 3 inCorporate welcome kits
12 x 9 x 4 inMulti-item hampers and bundles
14 x 10 x 5 inApparel and large curated sets

How to choose custom gift boxes

  1. Design the insert first

The insert dictates the internal dimensions. Sizing the box first almost always means re-tooling.

  2. Choose one hero finish

Foil on a soft-touch matte reads more expensive than three competing effects on gloss.

  3. Book seasonal runs early

Hand-finished gift boxes need artwork locked 8–10 weeks before an on-shelf date in Q4.

  4. Check freight, not just unit cost

Pre-assembled rigid boxes ship air; collapsible versions can halve landed cost on large orders.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a gift box and a rigid box?
All rigid boxes are non-collapsible chipboard structures; gift boxes are the presentation-focused subset of them, usually two-piece lid-and-base or magnetic closure, and almost always specified with a printed interior or insert.
Can I get inserts inside my custom gift boxes?
Yes — die-cut foam, folded card, moulded pulp and rigid cardboard platforms are all available. Send the products you need to hold and we will design the insert cavity dieline with the box.
What is the minimum order for custom gift boxes?
100 units per size and artwork. Rigid and hand-finished builds carry more setup cost than folding cartons, so the per-unit price falls fastest between 100 and 1,000 units.
How far in advance should I order holiday gift boxes?
Allow 8–10 weeks before your on-shelf date for foiled, embossed or ribbon-assembled boxes in Q4. Standard printed two-piece boxes need 4–6 weeks including transit.
Are custom gift boxes recyclable?
Uncoated and paper-wrapped greyboard boxes are recyclable. Foil stamping and lamination reduce recyclability; ask for water-based coatings and metallic-effect inks if kerbside recycling is a requirement.
Can gift boxes ship flat to save on freight?
Yes. Collapsible magnetic rigid boxes ship flat and assemble in seconds, typically cutting inbound freight volume by 60–70% compared with pre-erected rigid boxes.
