A custom cake box is a tall, flat-based food-grade carton engineered so a decorated cake arrives intact: a rigid reinforced base that does not flex when lifted, walls high enough to clear the decoration, and a lid that lifts straight off rather than swinging across the icing.

  • Base that does not flex. 450 gsm minimum, or corrugated for tiers, so the cake does not shift when lifted.
  • Lift-off lids for decoration. Vertical lid removal avoids the swing that smears icing.
  • Non-slip base options. Cavity-seated cake boards and die-cut lips stop movement in a car.
  • Matching cake boards. Printed boards produced in the same run and the same brand colours.

What are custom cake boxes?

Base rigidity is the whole engineering problem. A cake is heavy and its weight is concentrated in the centre; if the base flexes when someone picks the box up by its sides, the cake shifts and the icing cracks. That is why cake boxes use 450 gsm and up, or double-wall corrugated for tiers, and often pair with a separate cake board.

Height and lid action come next. A two-piece base-and-lid, or a hinged lid that lifts vertically, avoids the swing that smears decoration on the way open. Standard depths run 4, 6, 8 and 12 in for single, double and tiered cakes respectively.

For transport, a non-slip base is worth more than any other feature. A cake board seated in a slightly undersized cavity, or a small die-cut lip in the base, stops the cake sliding on a car seat — the single most common cause of ruined celebration orders.

Custom Cake Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom cake boxes.

Two-piece base and lid

Lid lifts straight off — safest for decorated and tiered cakes.

Hinged-lid cake box

One-piece with an attached lid; quickest to assemble at the counter.

Window cake box

Die-cut aperture in the lid or front so decoration is visible.

Tall tiered cake box

8–12 in depth with reinforced corners for multi-tier cakes.

Materials

Food-grade SBS 450 gsm
Rigid, bright white, clay-coated interior for direct contact.
E-flute corrugated
Extra base rigidity for heavier single-tier cakes.
Double-wall corrugated
Tiered and wedding cakes where base flex is unacceptable.
Kraft board
Artisan look; usually paired with a printed cake board.

Popular custom cake boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D)Typical use
6 x 6 x 4 inSmall round or square cake
8 x 8 x 5 inStandard celebration cake
10 x 10 x 6 inLarge single-tier cake
12 x 12 x 6 inSheet and slab cakes
14 x 14 x 12 inTwo- and three-tier cakes

How to choose custom cake boxes

  1. Never go below 450 gsm

Base flex is the number one cause of damaged celebration cakes.

  2. Add 2 in of headroom over the decoration

Toppers, drips and piping need more clearance than people expect.

  3. Order the cake board with the box

A board sized to seat inside the base is the cheapest anti-slip measure available.

  4. Specify a lift-off lid for decorated cakes

Hinged lids are faster at the counter but riskier over piping.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What board thickness should a cake box be?
450 gsm food-grade SBS is the practical minimum for single-tier cakes, and E-flute or double-wall corrugated for tiered cakes. Base flex when the box is lifted is what damages cakes, not wall strength.
How tall should a cake box be?
Add about 2 in of clearance above the tallest point of the decoration, including toppers and drips. Standard depths of 4, 6, 8 and 12 in cover single, large single, tall and tiered cakes.
How do I stop the cake sliding inside the box?
Use a cake board seated in a slightly undersized base cavity, or specify a small die-cut lip in the base. This is the cheapest and most effective anti-slip measure for car transport.
Can cake boxes have windows?
Yes, in the lid or the front panel, patched with clear food-safe film. Windows sell decorated cakes at the counter; we step the board up to keep the lid flat once the aperture is cut.
Do you supply matching cake boards?
Yes. Printed cake boards run alongside the boxes in the same brand colours and are sized to seat inside the base cavity.
What is the minimum order for custom cake boxes?
100 boxes per size and artwork, with price breaks at 250, 500 and 1,000 units — accessible for independent and cottage-food cake businesses.
