A custom shipping box is a printed regular slotted container (RSC) built to a specified edge crush test rating so it survives parcel and pallet transit. Unlike a mailer, it is glued or stitched at the manufacturer's joint and closed with tape, which makes it the cheaper choice at volume and the stronger choice for heavy goods.

  • Specified board strength. Every quote states the ECT grade so you can match the box to real carrier handling, not guesswork.
  • Lowest cost per cubic inch. RSC geometry wastes the least board of any shipper style.
  • Machine-erectable. Compatible with case erectors and automatic tapers used by 3PLs.
  • Pallet-optimised sizing. We can size the footprint to fit 1200 x 1000 mm or 48 x 40 in pallets without overhang.

What are custom shipping boxes?

The defining spec of a shipping box is not its print — it is its board grade. Edge Crush Test (ECT) measures how much stacking load a linear inch of board takes before it buckles; 32 ECT single wall handles roughly 20 kg, 44 ECT handles 30 kg, and double-wall grades go well beyond that. Under-specifying board is the single most common cause of transit damage claims.

RSC construction means all flaps are the same depth and the outer flaps meet in the middle. That geometry is what lets a shipper be erected by machine, taped in one pass, and stacked six high on a pallet without deforming. It is why fulfilment centres and 3PLs standardise on it.

Printing on a shipper is usually flexographic — one to three spot colours direct to kraft or white liner. It is dramatically cheaper per unit than litho-lamination, and for a box that will be handled by carriers rather than customers, a clean two-colour logo normally outperforms full-bleed photography on cost per impression.

Custom Shipping Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom shipping boxes.

Regular Slotted Container (RSC)

The workhorse. All flaps equal length, outer flaps meet at the centre. Lowest cost per cubic inch.

Full Overlap (FOL)

Outer flaps fully overlap for double thickness at the top and bottom — used for heavy or rough-handled loads.

Half Slotted Container (HSC)

Open-top tray, usually paired with a telescoping lid for oversized goods.

Double-wall shipper

Two fluted layers for loads over 30 kg or long-haul freight.

Materials

32 ECT single-wall kraft
Standard parcel grade for contents up to roughly 20 kg.
44 ECT single-wall
Heavier stacking strength for palletised or multi-leg journeys.
48–61 ECT double-wall
Freight and export loads, machinery parts, ceramics.
White-top kraft liner
Kraft strength with a printable white face when the shipper is retail-visible.

Printing & finishing options

  • Flexographic 1–3 spot colours
  • Litho-laminated full colour

Popular custom shipping boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

How to choose custom shipping boxes

  1. Start from gross weight

Weigh the packed box, then pick the ECT grade with a 25% margin. Damage claims cost far more than a heavier board.

  2. Check pallet fit

A 1 in change in footprint can add a whole extra layer per pallet. Tell us your pallet spec and we will optimise the cube.

  3. Keep print simple

Two flexo spot colours on kraft delivers most of the branding value at a fraction of litho-lamination cost.

  4. Ask for a stacking calculation

If boxes are warehoused stacked, request the compression estimate before committing to a grade.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What ECT rating do I need for my shipping boxes?
Use 32 ECT single-wall for packed weights up to about 20 kg, 44 ECT up to about 30 kg, and double-wall 48–61 ECT above that or for freight and export. Send us the packed weight and route and we will specify the grade.
What is the difference between a shipping box and a mailer box?
A shipping box is a taped, glue-jointed RSC optimised for cost and strength at volume. A mailer box is a one-piece die-cut shipper that folds without tape and is optimised for branded unboxing. Shippers win on price per unit, mailers win on presentation.
Can shipping boxes be printed in full colour?
Yes, via litho-lamination, but for most transit boxes one to three flexographic spot colours on kraft or white liner gives a better cost-per-impression. We quote both so you can compare.
What is the minimum order for custom shipping boxes?
100 boxes per size on digital and short-run flexo. Corrugated economics improve sharply with volume — expect meaningful per-unit drops at 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units.
Do you supply boxes sized to my pallet?
Yes. Give us your pallet dimensions (48 x 40 in or 1200 x 1000 mm are the most common) and we will size the footprint so full layers fit with no overhang, which is what carriers charge for.
How fast can shipping boxes be produced?
Standard is 8–12 business days after artwork approval. Plain and single-colour kraft shippers can often move in 5–7 business days.
